Calm Jar Ocean, a baby activity for 1–3 months

How to play

1
Fill a small mason jar about three-quarters full with water.
2
Add a few drops of natural food coloring and a tablespoon of rice or dried lentils.
3
Seal the lid tightly and wrap with strong tape for extra security.
4
Hold the jar and slowly tilt it in front of baby, let them watch the swirling colors and tumbling rice.

What you need

• A small mason jar with a screw-on lid
• Water
• Natural food coloring
• Rice or dried lentils
• Strong tape

Simple household items. No plastic toys needed.

Why it works

Sensory jars captivate babies with slow-moving visual stimulation, building focus and calm attention. The weight of a glass jar also provides grounding sensory input.

Good to know

An adult should always hold the jar, do not let baby hold or drop it. Tape the lid securely. Use a small jar (half-pint) so it's easy to manage. If you prefer not to use glass, a stainless steel water bottle with a clear window works too.
