Sensory Rice Bin, a baby activity for 3–6 months

How to play

1
Pour dry rice into a shallow bin or baking dish.
2
Hide 3-4 small toys just under the surface of the rice.
3
Let baby plunge their hands in and feel the rice flowing through their fingers.
4
Show them how to dig to find the hidden treasures: "What's hiding in there? You found the ball!"

What you need

• Dry rice (about 1 kg)
• A shallow bin or baking dish
• 3-4 small toys

Simple household items. No plastic toys needed.

Why it works

Digging through rice provides deep tactile input and builds hand strength. Finding hidden objects develops object permanence and the thrill of discovery.

Good to know

Supervise closely as rice is a choking hazard. A little tasting is normal, but prevent baby from eating handfuls. Lay a sheet under the bin for easy cleanup!
